What Is OCD?

Obsessive compulsive disorder is a mental health disorder that impacts people of all ages from all backgrounds.  Obsessions refer to unwanted, intrusive urges or thoughts that trigger powerful feelings of discomfort. These obsessions occur regularly, and they are beyond the person’s control dominating a person’s life and restricting it.  Having OCD takes up a lot of time out of the day and cause substantial distress in daily functioning.

Familiar obsessions in OCD are:

  • fear of contamination
  • fear of acting on impulse to harm self or others
  • fear of offending God
  • fear of losing or forgetting important information
  • fear of sickness happening to self or others

So a person who fears spreading germs might wash their hands numerous times. But another person who worries about others getting sick may find that they count numbers under the pretence that the order of numbers will stop the fear from manifesting.

“Thoughts are just thoughts and they only have the power you allow them have.”

Common compulsions in OCD include:

  • cleaning excessively
  • excessive bathing or brushing teeth
  • Avoiding certain objects, social activities
  • rearranging things in a particular order
  • repeating specific body movements
  • repeating activities in safe multiples
  • cancelling or undoing ‘bad’ behaviours
  • fear and panic over sickness in themselves or others
  • repeatedly checking or switching off a particular object e.g. closing a door
  • rereading or rewriting material

Hand washing2How can hypnotherapy help?

Hypnosis is the state of focused attention, deep relaxation and increased suggestibility that treats illness by harnessing the power of the imagination.  When you are in a state of deep hypnotic relaxation, your imagination becomes a powerful way to calm and take the sting out of the anxiety created and neutralising your intense emotions.  Allowing you to distance yourself from an object or situation which causes distress helping to neutralise your emotions.

Despite the obstacles, pursuing recovery its always worth it. Even if it takes time, learning how to practice a new way of thinking and behaving is one of the most rewarding feelings you can experience allowing you to create the life you want.
