Emetophobia

The fear also spreads to seeing others be sick.  Sometimes, even the anticipation or thought of the situation is enough to provoke the response and the person then begins to experience the classic symptoms of panic attacks. Some phobias are sometimes be linked to a bad experience, usually in childhood, although this is not always the case.  The very act of vomiting stimulates the sympathetic nervous system triggering sweating, shaking and raised heart rate, just like fight/flight and panic attack.

Emetophobia makes people very hesitant about having medical treatment, they don’t like to be around anyone who is sick, or just might be sick, refuse to eat in public places like restaurants, and do not eat very well because they are desperately afraid of being sick. All of these things can seriously impede on someone's ability to have a normal life.   Everyday tasks like drinking, eating certain foods, places where people gather, travel, dental and hospital treatments become the focus of the fear.  Because they struggle with eating, drinking and being around people they develop social phobia and stop eating out which limits their social life.

Anticipatory nausea is distressing and can happen anytime, when driving to the hospital, doctors or dentist, the waiting room, the sight of doctors or nurses can set it off and just about anything each individual is different.

What causes emetophobia?

  • Feelings of nausea.
  • Vomiting.
  • Having already had chemotherapy
  • Others vomiting (including animals)
  • A combination of all of these.
  • A loss of ‘control’
  • While some people will fear all vomit, no matter what the cause, others only fear vomiting caused by infections, and do not fear alcohol induced vomiting, morning sickness etc.
  • Hearing someone else vomit
  • Hearing about an illness going around that includes vomiting
  • Watching a television show or a movie where someone vomits
  • A visit to the doctor
  • A visit to the dentist
  • Having to check into the hospital
  • Going to visit someone in the hospital
  • Fear of germs
  • Consuming food that you have an idea might make you sick
