Fibromyalgia sometimes called Fibromyalgia syndrome is associated with wide spread pain, fatigue and stiffness. People suffering with Fibromyalgia may have increased sensitivity to pain, muscle stiffness/tenderness, fatigue, sleep disturbance, skin hurts when touched, headaches, irritable bowel syndrome and an increased problem with mental processes (fibro fog) having difficulty with memory and concentration.

Fibromyalgia is a difficult condition to diagnose as there’s no specific test for the condition and symptoms are similar to other conditions so fibromyalgia can be easily dismissed. This is exasperating and stressful for the sufferer causing the condition intensify.

However there is now increasing evidence showing that fibromyalgia patients have a high number of neurotransmitters called substance P, which is found in the spinal fluid. These transmitters apparently allow pain messages to be sent to the brain even when there is no source of pain. A person’s perception of pain is greatly exaggerated because of this.

Research has found that neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine were lower than normal in Fibromyalgia sufferers.  Serotonin plays a part in the regulation of substance P (substance P amplifies pain signals) which is why some of the symptoms found in fibromyalgia are very similar to those of depression.  A low level of serotonin leads to lowered pain thresholds or an increased sensitivity to pain.

Hypnotherapy helps the body increase the levels of serotonin and maintain the correct regulation of substance P, it also helps you deal with the possible stimulates which may have triggered the illness.

The three objectives you should expect from the treatment are:

  • Reduced pain immediately
  • Reduced pain long term
  • Reduction in suffering from the symptoms

Hypnotherapy is emerging as one of the best alternative therapies in alleviating the pain of Fibromyalgia and doctors are recognising hypnosis as a realistic treatment in the management of pain. Research of what happens to the brain during hypnosis showed reduced activity in the pain area of the brain suggesting that using hypnosis as a treatment actually has a physical beneficial effect on the brain.

Clients suffering with Fibromyalgia say it has often developed after a stressful traumatic experience.  Hypnosis helps to deal with the root cause of the problem creating a clearer mind to aid recovery.  Hypnotherapy helps them be less stressed and anxious which helps them feel better equipped to deal with Fibromyalgia as they can take control and manage the pain positively.  A positive approach can make a real difference to their condition and improve their quality of life. While hypnosis is not a cure for Fibromyalgia it most certainly alleviates the symptoms experienced giving back the person control over their body and mind to enable them to enjoy life again.
